This song started with a riff and a drum beat, which is how I usually begin writing. I borrowed some of the chord movement from Chicago 25 or 624 — not the bass rhythm, but some of the same chords — and built the rest of the song from there.
The drums are programmed with Addictive Drums 2 by XLN Audio. I used a heavier, more metal-style kit with double kick drums so they would really cut through the mix. I also used multiple snare sounds and rimshot accents to give the rhythm more variation and movement.
